Cape York Fishing - Frequently Asked Questions

Two Options Option 1 Fly from Cairns to Bamaga aboard either Skytrans(1300759872) or Regional Pacific(1300797677) Option 2 Fly from Cairns to Horn Island aboard Qantaslink(131313) and Peddell’s ferry (0740691511) to Seisia.

We suggest:

  • 1 rod tube containing approx three rods - a baitcaster for the estuary, a spinstick for casting for pelagics and an overhead trolling outfit for bluewater. With the advent of modern technology, you can now purchase spinning outfits that out perform overheads and in our situation you can get away with two outfits if you're willing to pay. Remember this: we do supply fishing gear but nothing beats knowing and using your own gear.

  • 1 waterproof bag weighing approx 19Kg and containing:
    • 6 long sleeve fishing shirts (most bring Columbia but I reckon the sandflies get in the vents) and 6 matching pants
    • a LED headlamp
    • 1pr leatherman
    • 1waterproof coat
    • 1 towel (you will be provided with a clean towel on camp)
    • digital camera with waterproof case with spare battery and 240volt charger
    • 1pr polarised sunglasses(a cheap set as backup and a strap are handy)
    • 1pr sun gloves
    • 1pr croc sandals with a few pairs of socks
    • sunscreen 30+ Banana boat is the best, zinc, lip balm
    • insect repellent (most bring Bushman’s Gel, small pump spray of Inox
    • personal toiletries and if you are susceptible to sandfly bite, stingose or teatree oil and if possible get a script from your doctor for Bactroban as nothing wards off tropical ulcers and infections better.Remember this-you will be in a hot, humid environment
    • Staminade powder if you wish
    • a good hat ( most bring an Arafat style and a wide brimmed straw hat)
    • a dozen personal favourite lures
    • 3 reels (spooled with 30pd braid)wrapped up in at least some rags or face washers

If fishing is the paramount objective of the trip and you want to fish with lures and/or fly, a group of four people, fishing out of two boats with two guides gives you all the benefits of having plenty of casting room and space, a mate to fish with and a guide to put you on the fish. There is also the security of knowing there is a second boat in an otherwise extremely remote area. If the two boats are working as a team together, you find the fish and work out a game plan twice as fast as just one boat fishing and you can enjoy a bit of competition and banter between the two boats along the way.

This will depend on what your group wants to catch, what style of fishing you wish to do, the timing of the trip and the weather. What you can depend upon is being placed in an remote, pristine area with the knowledge and gear to achieve your goals with all the tropical species you could ever want to catch in Australia.

Fishing situations as diverse as on-foot casting lures, catching Barra in billabongs, pelagic madness at some obscure pressure point on one of the many reefs the Great Barrier has to offer in our area. Getting jammed up tight in a Jack attack up some small mangrove lined estuaries, sight-fishing large areas of shallow sandflats, bouncing the rubble in 30 – 50 foot chasing the reds or casting at Saratoga in crystal clear freshwater it is all on offer.

Yes, plus many other species. Variety is what brings our regular clients back time and time again.

We have a catch and release policy so you won't be able take any fish with you. You will of course enjoy eating plenty of fresh fish while on trip and your photos will last longer than the fillets.

Yes crocs are present all over the Cape and although we have not had a croc situation involving clients, we take all possible precautions to ensure the threat doesn’t become a reality.

We serve up simple wholesome Aussie campfire cooked roasts, steaks, ribs, baked and fried fish, veggies cooked in the coals and fresh salads for dinners. Fresh bread baked daily in the camp oven with sliced meats and accompaniments for lunch. Breakfast can be a quick bowl of cereal and/or a fry-up of bacon and eggs depending on what's on.

Our published prices are firm. We are aware that just getting here from most places is expensive so we try to keep our prices as low as possible.

Yes, but you cannot bring it on the plane to Bamaga. Bamaga airport is an Alcohol Restricted Zone. You can however purchase a limited amount in Bamaga itself to take on the trip. If you come via Horn Island you will not pass through an Alcohol Restricted Zone. This isn't however a get drunk every night trip. Hangovers and fishing in these conditions just doesn't work.
